The opening ceremony of the 65th General Assembly of the World Health Organisation (WHO) opened Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, with the theme “Ageing and Health: Good health adds life to years”.
Nearly 3,000 delegates from 194
member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) attended the annual
meeting. The attending Vietnam
delegation is headed by Vice Minister of health Nguyen Viet Tien.
This year's assembly will focus primarily on public health issues such as universal health care, the Millennium Development Goals and non-communicable diseases, mental disorders, nutrition and adolescent pregnancy. In addition, the Health Assembly will address reform and development within the World Health Organization.
During the one week session, one of the most important topics is the appointment of the WHO Director General. Current Director General Margaret Chan was nominated for a second term by the WHO Executive Board in January and the nomination will be submitted for approval by the General Assembly of the World Health on Wednesday afternoon.
Chan was elected as director-general on November 9, 2006 and her current term runs through June 2012. If approved by the assembly, Chan’s new term will begin on July 1, 2012 and continue until June 30, 2017./.
