Four plants that have grown from the “3000-year-old rice” excavated from Thanh Den archaeological site in Hanoi have been ripening. Meanwhile the rice husks have been sent to Japan to assess their age.
Le Duy Ham, director of the Institute for Agricultural Genetics, confirmed that four rice plants have ripened. These plants were grown Dong Dau cultural archaeological site paddies estimated to be 3000 years old. They were sown on May 5.
At the same time, six other rice plants sowed one week later and modern rice plants sowed for comparison have not ripened yet.
Ham speculated said these rice plants may belong to a short-term rice variety, but scientists are waiting for the results of Japan’s age assessment.
Dr. Lam Thi My Dung, who found the ancient paddies, observed that the test in Japan is underway and results will be revealed in late July or early August.
