At the seminar, which is being hosted by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, participants discussed piracy concerns in regional waters, relevant laws stipulated by each country, and the co-operation of ASEAN members in enhancing maritime security.
Speaking at the function, Malaysian Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim stressed the significance of conducting coordinated naval exercises and establishing a regional information network.
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Thi Kim Nguyet from the participating Vietnamese delegation urged ASEAN members to boost their information exchange and organise additional capacity-building programmes.
Nguyet said Vietnam has implemented a number of measures to combat piracy and maritime terrorism, including holding several workshops and seminars, organising drills on crime control at sea, and setting up a joint-hotline with the Philippines, another of which is currently being established with China.
