ASEAN to enhance military intelligence cooperation for regional peace, security

The 21st ASEAN Military Intelligence Meeting (AMIM-21) took place in Vientiane, Laos, on September 3 with the attendance of representatives from 10 ASEAN countries as well as Timor-Lester as an observer.

At the meeting, delegates held that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is one of the regions of important strategy in terms of geopolitics, military and socio-economy. Currently, the regional and world situation continues to have old and new security threats and challenges, directly and indirectly affecting peace, stability and development of the region. Therefore, ASEAN needs to continue to cooperate to address those challenges.

With the theme “ASEAN: Together for Peace, Security and Resilience”, the meeting provided a platform for ASEAN military intelligence officials to exchange views on enhancing cooperation in the intelligence sector, contributing to regional defense collaboration, and safeguarding peace, stability, and resilience in the region, in line with the common views and spirit of the ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces Meeting, the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting and related meeting held this year.

In addition, AMIM-21 also focused on discussing and exchanging views on the outstanding situation in the region, cooperation between the ASEAN member countries in the military/defence framework, especially in the intelligence sector, emphasising the importance of specialised cooperation mechanisms such as the the ASEAN Junior Intelligence Interaction Programme (AJIIP), ASEAN Our Eyes (AOE), and ASEAN Military Intelligence Community (AMIC).

The delegates agreed to continue to enhance capacity, mutual trust in responding to security challenges, contributing to maintaining peace, stability and socio-economic development in the region.
