ASEAN-US Special Leaders’ Summit releases Sunnylands Declaration

The US and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued the Sunnylands Declaration on February 17 (Vietnam time) after their two-day summit in California, the US.

The US and ASEAN reaffirm 17 key principles in the document, said the White House’s announcement.

The principles include mutual respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, commitment to peaceful resolution of disputes, commitment to fostering cooperation to handle navigation, and firm adherence to the shared prosperity, sustainable, inclusive economic growth and development.

The Special ASEAN-US Leaders’ Summit was the first ever to be held in the US and the very first Summit following the establishment of the ASEAN Community in late 2015, according to the announcement.

The Summit marked a watershed year for both ASEAN and for the increasingly close ASEAN-US strategic partnership.
