Cambodia: CPP says it wins 114 seats in new parliament

The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won 114 out of 125 seats of the sixth National Assembly following the general election on July 29, according to an unofficial document of the party.

The party earned a landslide victory in many localities, including Phnom Penh with ten out of 12 seats and nine seats each in Kandal, Prey Veng and Kampong Cham.

The document also showed that the National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful and Cooperative Cambodia (FUNCINPEC) gained six seats and the League for Democracy Party (LDP) grabbed five, while 17 others did not win any.

Earlier, the CPP said it won some 4.2 million out of more than 6.8 million votes in the country’s general election, or 61.7 percent.

The number of votes was much higher than the 48.83 percent of votes that the CPP gained in the 2013 election.

Previously, the National Election Committee (NEC) announced Cambodia’s general election was a success with the voter turnout estimated at 82.17 percent.

Twenty political parties competed for 125 seats in the parliament. The NEC plans to announce preliminary results on August 11 and official results on August 15 in case of no complaints from political parties.
