Cambodia: Prime Minister calls on people to maintain peace

Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on people to join him to maintain the country’s peace as Cambodia is preparing for the commune elections in June.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen

He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Cambodian New Year celebrations at the Angkor Archeological Park in northwestern Siem Reap province on April 14.

The commune elections are set to take place on June 4 with the participation 12 political parties in 1,646 communal and ward councils across the country.

The result of the June elections is considered strongly influencing the National Assembly election which is scheduled for July 2018.

On April 13, the Cambodian National Election Committee (NEC) reported that hackers tried to break and change data of the online list of registered voters for the June elections.

However, NEC said the act did not affect the official voter list as the data was kept not only on the website of NEC but also on other secured server systems.

The lists were also printed and sent to the election committees in localities to prepare for the upcoming elections.

The commune elections in Cambodia are held every five years.
