Cambodia takes actions to fight drug crimes

The Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ), in collaboration with the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD), on July 22 organised a forum on “Policies and Strategies of the Royal Government of Cambodia to Combat Illegal Drugs”.

The forum, chaired by NACD Secretary General Gen. Meas Virith and CCJ President Puy Kea, was designed to provide an opportunity for experts to outline the Cambodian Government’s policies and strategies in the fight against illicit drugs. They also looked into the general situation of the drug problem in the world and Cambodia, as well as the challenges and commitments of the government, including specialised institutions in the fight against drugs in Cambodia.

Gen. Meas Virith introduced six directions and eight priority strategic solutions proposed by the NACD to the 7th-term Government in the fight against drugs in Cambodia.

Puy Kea affirmed that the CCJ considers this forum very important for journalists to not only understand the situation of the drug problem but also gain knowledge on anti-drug policies and strategies, along with procedures for prosecuting those involved in drug cases.

The Anti-Drug Department of Cambodia (ADP) reported in early June that in the first five months of this year, the country arrested over 9,300 drug suspects, including 324 foreigners, and seized 4.71 tonnes of various types of drugs.

In late June, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for heightened public awareness and innovative approaches to combat the illicit drug trade.

He also stressed the importance of using the "NoDrug" online application of the NACD to facilitate community involvement in drug prevention initiatives./.
