Cambodian PM opens first cabinet meeting

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on September 25 opened the first cabinet meeting after his government was formed.

Addressing his cabinet members at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Hun Sen said it is another historical milestone for Cambodia that the government of the fifth legislature of the National Assembly has launched.

He said the most important agenda is “the launching of the Government's Rectangular Strategy in Phase III,” adding that reforms are the top priority for Cambodia and the country will continue deepening reforms in all fields in order to increase competitiveness, sustain economic growth and reduce poverty.

Hun Sen was sworn in as Cambodian Prime Minister on September 24 for another five-year term after the National Assembly, formed by 68 lawmakers of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), re-elected him as the Government leader despite a boycott of the opposition due to disputed poll results.

Cambodia held a general election on July 28. The results showed that the ruling CPP of Prime Minister Hun Sen won 68 out of the 123 parliamentary seats and the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) of opposition leader Sam Rainsy got 55 seats.

The opposition refused to accept the outcome and boycotted the opening session of the fifth legislature on September 23.

Under the country's constitution, a new government was formed by a 50 percent plus one majority, or 63 lawmakers, in the parliament.

The CNRP said in a press conference on September 25 that it will organise fresh demonstrations nationwide to protest the results of the fifth legislature’s September 23-24 session. The Party also announced that it does not recognize the Prime Minister Hun Sen-led government as it said this was a violation of the constitution.
