Countries tighten security following Nice terror attack

The deadly cargo truck attack on crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice on the evening of July 14 killed at least 84 people and injured hundreds more, heightening fears of terrorist attacks around the globe.

Many countries took immediate security steps.  In his first address following the deadly attack, French President Francois Hollande announced that France’s current state of emergency, set to expire on July 26, will be extended. 10,000 soldiers mobilized to reinforce security in sensitive areas will be kept on. French Minister of the Interior Bernard Cazeneuve called on young citizens to become reservists to boost security in the wake of this latest attack.

Belgium, which has also been the target of terror attacks, is preparing additional security for its upcoming National Day celebration. Prime Minister Charles Michel said Friday that additional security measures will be taken for the Belgian National Holiday on July 21. The country’s threat level is at its maximum.

Four months ago suicide bombers killed 32 people in the Brussels airport and subway.

Meanwhile, the Italian government has instructed all local prefects and police chiefs to review current security measures and reinforce all sensitive targets”, particularly public places. Italian agencies are being asked to exchange information with intelligence agencies and work 24 hours a day to thwart terrorist threats.

Germany has announced it will tighten controls at airports and at road and rail crossings into France. These efforts will be made in coordination with French security forces.

In South East Asia, the Royal Thai Police Chief has ordered police throughout the country to strengthen security, and the Thai Immigration Department has been asked to tighten control of foreigners entering or leaving Thailand.

The Nice attack has worried authorities in Rio de Janeiro where the Olympics 2016 will be held from August 5 to 21. 47,000 police and 38,000 soldiers will be deployed during the games.
