Dozens killed in Sri Lanka blast An explosion in Sri Lanka has killed at least 60 people, most of them policemen, officials say.
A military spokesman said a container carrying explosives accidentally blew up at a police station near the eastern city of Batticaloa.
The explosives were being signed over to two Chinese construction contractors, Maj Gen Ubaya Medawala told AFP news agency.
Initial reports said the blast occurred at a police ammunition dump.
"It's an accidental explosion," Maj Gen Medawala said.
"The munitions were kept at the police station for safety reasons. It exploded as police were issuing some munitions to the contractors.
"We believe over 60 have died - this includes two Chinese contractors and the rest policemen," he said.
