East Asia-Latin America step up mutual cooperation

The 6th Foreign Ministerial Meeting of the Forum for East Asia–Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) opened in Bali, Indonesia on June 13.

Co-chaired by the host country and Columbia, the two-day meeting witnessed the participation of two deputy prime ministers, 15 foreign ministers, two deputy foreign ministers, seven high-ranking officials from the member countries, and ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh.

 

The Vietnamese delegation is led by Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc.

The meeting focuses on ways to raise cooperation for mutual benefit between the two regions in trade and investment, tourism, biodiversity research, foodstuff and the aviation industry.

The event is a great opportunity for FEALAC member countries to boost mutual cooperation and reap practical benefits from the cooperation, said Director General for American and European Affairs under the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dian Triansyah Djani. He noted that trade between the two regions accounts for 30 percent of global trade, and they are forecast to contribute 66 percent of global economic growth this year.

East Asia and Latin America are home to 40 percent of the global population and together they produce 34 percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).

Latin America has strength in grain production and East Asia in rice production.

FEALAC economies have achieved fast and stable growth over the last years with an average increase of 5 percent.

Founded in 1999, FEALAC brings together 36 countries and acts as an official forum to connect the two regions. More than 200 projects and initiatives have been implemented during the 14-year existence of the forum’s cooperation framework.
