India and Cambodia signed four agreements on January 27, including a 36.9-million-USD credit package for a water resource development project in Cambodia and an MoU on prevention of human trafficking during an official visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen to India.

An agreement to foster cooperation in mutual legal assistance in criminal matters was also endorsed alongside a cultural exchange programme from 2018-2020.

The memorandum of understanding on prevention of human trafficking will allow the two countries to step up cooperation in preventing, rescuing and repatriating human trafficking victims.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen also agreed during their talks to further bolster the two countries’ defence ties through exchanges of senior-level defence personnel and capacity building projects.

They also discussed ways to strengthen the development partnership and reinforce ties in trade and investment, energy conservation, agriculture, culture and tourism.

India is all set to deepen cooperation with Cambodia in the time ahead, Modi said.

According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the two countries’ relations date backs to the first century AD when Hindu and Buddhist religious and cultural influences emanated from India to various parts of Southeast Asia.
