India, Japan urge avoidance of unilateral action in East Sea

Japan and India have stated they will cooperate under the framework of the East Asia Summit to promote a balanced and open regional structure to ensure maritime security in the region.

In a joint statement issued after talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in New Delhi on December 12, the two leaders affirmed their support of maritime and aviation freedom as well as unimpeded commerce activities at sea.

They underlined the critical importance of the sea routes in the East Sea to regional energy security, trade and commerce, and called on all involved parties to avoid unilateral action that could lead to tension in the region.

They underscored that disputes should be solved peacefully and all countries must abide by international laws and norms on maritime.

Both PMs acknowledged that full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the early conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) by consensus will contribute to peace and stability of the region.

The two sides agreed to hold regular consultations on issues related to maritime safety and security of sea communication.
