During a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani, Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin discussed efforts to enhance defence cooperation between the two countries. This included the potential transfer of military technology to Indonesia, the ministry’s spokesperson Frega Ferdinand Wenas said.

As reported by Japan's Kyodo News, the two ministers discussed the possible joint development of a naval ship as the two countries aim to strengthen their maritime security cooperation. A new vessel could be modeled after a destroyer of Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force, according to a Japanese government official.

Exports of destroyers are restricted under Japan's Three Principles on Transfer of Defence Equipment and Technology but are allowed when they are jointly developed and manufactured with another nation./.
