Indonesia police intensify security ahead of Asian Games

The Indonesian police have gunned down 11 suspected criminals in an operation to free the capital, Jakarta, of street crime before the Asian Games 2018 slated for next month.

Fifty-two were shot for resisting the arrest and 11 of them died, Jakarta Police Spokesman Prabowo Argo Yuwono said.

Nearly 2,000 people have been arrested since the operation began from early this month, he added.

The two-month operation against thieves, thugs and other street criminals aims to boost security for the Asian Games, which will take place in Jakarta, Palembang and West Java from August 18 to September 2.

Security is the top priority at the event following recent suicide bombings in Indonesia's second-largest city, Surabaya, that killed 26 people, including 13 attackers.

Some 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories and several thousand journalists and officials are expected to participate in the upcoming Asian Games.

As planned, about 100,000 security officers will be deployed across the three venues throughout the sport event.
