Iran, Pakistan border reopened after 6 months' closure

Iran on Wednesday reopened its border with Pakistan, which was closed after two suicide attacks in an Iranian border city, blamed on Pakistan-based anti-Iran group, officials said.

Iran closed the border with Pakistan at Taftan after two suicide bombers struck a mosque in Zahidan in July 2010 which had killed 22 people and injured 160.

Iranian authorities said that attackers crossed into Iran from Pakistani territory, the charges Islamabad always denies.

A formal border opening ceremony was held at Zero Point at Taftan, which was attended by officials from both sides.

A large number of people involved in the cross-border trade welcomed the reopening of the border and hoped that the border reopening will increase trade activities. Officials said that nearly 5000 people are connected with the border trade.

Assistant Commissioner of Taftan Khalid Dad Baloch, Pakistan Frontier Corps Commander Major Khuram and Commander of Border Security Force-2 Mehdi Zamani attended the ceremony.

Baloch told reporters that the border was reopened after series of talks between the Pakistani and Iranian officials. He said the decisive round of talks was held on Wednesday.

Both sides also agreed that they would ensure reopening of the border, he said.

Traders, social and political leaders hailed the development and termed it beneficial for the trade activities which remained halted for the last five month.
