Lao national assembly election results released

The Lao National Election Committee (NEC) has announced results of the election of the eighth National Assembly and provincial People’s Councils that took place on March 20.

Chairman of the NA Committee for External Relations and NEC spokesperson Koukeo Akhamountry told a press conference on March 28 that the election was conducted in a transparent manner and in line with law, and the turnout was 97.9%.

As many as 149 deputies, including 41 women, were elected from 210 candidates to the NA. Some 39 were reelected to the legislative.

The youngest deputy is 36 years old and the oldest is 74 years old.

Nearly 4 million Lao eligible voters in 18 provinces and cities nationwide cast their ballots to elect 149 NA deputies and 360 others to provincial People’s Councils on March 20.

The country’s Constitution, amended in 2015, stipulates for the first time that provincial People’s Councils are set up to consider and approve local decisions while supervising the operations of local organs of power.

The councils are also there to make decisions on local socio-economic development and budget plans, and the appointment and dismissal of provincial governors based on the proposal of the councils’ standing members.
