Laos’ 10th National Party Congress closes

The 10th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) concluded on January 22 after sitting for five days.

The Congress approved important documents which are strategic to Laos’ long-term development, including the political report of the 9th Party Central Committee, the eighth five-year socio-economic development plan for 2016-2020, the socio-economic development strategy for 2016-2025, the 2030 vision report and the Party statutes (supplemented and amended).

Delegates also adopted seven lessons withdrawn from the 30-year reform while devising seven new orientations and tasks for the next period.

The Congress elected the 10th Party Central Committee with 69 official and eight alternative members, which then elected Bounnhang Vorachith as the Party General Secretary for the new tenure.

An 11-strong Politburo was elected, including Bounnhang Vorachith, Thongloun Sisoulith, Pany Yathotou, Bounthong Chitmany, Phankham Viphavan, Chansy Phosikham, Chansamone Chanyalath, Khamphan Phommathat, Saysomphone Phomvihane, Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune and Sonexay Siphandone.

The Secretariat groups nine members with Phankham Viphavan assuming the post its permanent member.

The Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission is staffed by nine members led by Bounthong Chithmany.

In his closing remarks, new Party General Secretary Bounnhang Vorachith said apart from some great opportunities ahead, Laos is facing a range of huge challenges to reach prosperity.

Against that backdrop, he called on the entire Party, population and army to consistently pursue comprehensive reform on the basis of set principles.

The Lao Party chief also urged efforts to continue protecting and increasing the Party’s role in society and in the reform process in order to fulfill targets outlined at the Congress.
