Madagascar named Kolo Christophe Laurent Roger, a radiologist who lived abroad for decades, as its new prime minister on April 11, as part of a process aimed at ending prolonged political turmoil on the Indian Ocean island.
The announcement came in a statement from President Hery Rajaonarimampianina's office.
Kolo, 70, who ran a radiology practice in Switzerland, returned to Madagascar last year after spending more than 30 years abroad.
Kolo's appointment will raise hopes that the new government can continue to repair relations with the international community.
External financing made up 40% of the island's budget until major donors like the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the US and the European Union withdrew aid after rebel troops led by former disc jockey Andry Rajoelina seized power in 2009.
Madagascar held presidential and legislative elections in December to restore democracy after the coup.
