Vice President of the Malaysian People's Justice Party (PKR) Rafizi Ramli will be investigated by the police under the Anti-Fake News Act 2018.

Negeri Sembilan Police chief Noor Azam Jamaludin said the police will record a statement from Rafizi over his alleged defamatory remarks on social media against the Election Commission (EC) and the police pertaining to the nomination for the Rantau state seat in the general election, the state news agency Bernama reported on May 5.

Noor stressed that the police will call up Rafizi and the others involved as soon as possible.

Rafizi is being investigated for his comments on social media about the filing of nomination papers for the election at a district in the state of Negeri Sembilan, he added.

Malaysia's parliament passed its "fake news" law in April, making it one of the first countries to pass such a law.

The law is aimed at cutting off dissent and free speech ahead of the election.
