Myanmar expects about 3 million tonnes of rice and broken rice will be exported in the 2025–2026 fiscal year as the country seeks to access key markets like China, said Chairman of the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) U Ye Min Aung.

The Department of Agriculture under the Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has invited companies wishing to apply for registration to export rice and broken rice to China to submit expressions of interest (EOI).

The companies are required to comply with the sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreements signed between Myanmar and China.

New companies, excluding the ones with previous licenses, should submit their EOIs to the Department of Agriculture and the MRF’s technical working group on exporting rice and broken rice to China, and submit the proposals no later than June 30, 2025.

In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, Myanmar exported more than 2.48 million tonnes of rice and broken rice. The highest export volume was recorded in October, at more than 424,000 tonnes, according to the MRF.

The biggest markets of Myanmar rice in the fiscal year were Indonesia (107,450 tonnes), China (37,713 tonnes), Cote D'Ivoire (31,940 tonnes), the Philippines (5,793 tonnes), and Poland (5,116 tonnes). Meanwhile, broken rice was shipped to such large markets as Senegal (52,358 tonnes), Belgium (27,650 tonnes), China (17,573 tonnes), Cote D'Ivoire (15,000 tonnes), and the UK (4,900 tonnes)./.
