Myanmar lifts martial law in Kokang region

The Myanmar government lifted the martial law imposed in the Kokang region of the State of Shan as order has been restored, according to an order of the country’s Presidential Office published on November 18.

The order indicated that the lifting was effective from November 17.

On February 17 this year, the Myanmar government first declared a 90-day state of emergency along with the imposition of the martial law in the region following a heavy fighting between the government forces and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).

The state of emergency, which was extended for three times, expired on November 17.

The MNDAA unilaterally declared a ceasefire in June for the sake of stability and peace along the border and in view of the fact that the country's general election was then approaching.

The MNDAA was not invited by the government in peace deal although the government has signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord (NCA) with eight armed groups on October 15.

The ethnic side proposed the MNDAA engage in the signing process but the government tended to have separate talks with the group.
