Myanmar: military chief pledges to cooperate with gov't in transition

The announcement came at a military parade held in the capital city of Nay Pyi Taw to honor the 71st National Armed Forces Day.

In his remarks, the general warned of two main obstacles on the road to democracy: weaknesses in law enforcement ; and existence of armed insurgencies.

He underlined that the armed forces will ensure a good foundation for the democratic transition and transfer of power.

The general highlighted that the military will safeguard the country, take care of the people and assist the government in implementing steady development. The military will not tolerate such acts as deviation from the good foundation for transition that may lead to loss of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and disintegration of the union.

He also emphasized the role of military in domestic peace efforts which resulted in the signing of the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord (NCA) in November 2015 and called on the armed groups to follow the accord.

President-elect U Htin Kyaw of by the National League for Democracy (NLD) will be sworn in at a ceremony on March 30.

Retired General Myint Swe will become First Vice President and U Henry Van Thio of the National League for Democracy (LND) will become Second Vice President.
