Myanmar strives to build ASEAN flower city

Myanmar is planning to turn Pyin Oo Lwin, the country’s hill town into a flower city of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Myanmar will use flower varieties and farming technique from the Netherlands in Pyin Oo Lwin, thereby improving the flower quality and reducing the import of flowers from other countries, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar.

A private company will import flower seeds from the Netherlands to grow quality flower plants with the use of natural fertilizer in a bid to export flowers to the international markets, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of Myanmar. A Flower Growers' Association will also be formed to accelerate the project.

Meanwhile, Myanmar is scheduled to launch the Pyin Oo Lwin Flower Festival on December 1. The one-month festival will take place at the National Kandawgyi Botanical Garden, featuring more than 130,000 foreign and local flower species including artificial ones.

Last year's annual flower festival attracted millions of visitors.

Pyin Oo Lwin is a scenic hill town in Mandalay region and is located in the Shan Highland, some 67 km east of Mandalay and at an altitude of 1,070 metres.-VNA
