New Italian 'grand coalition' government sworn in

A new Italian government has been sworn in at the presidential Quirinale Palace in Rome.  Enrico Letta's acceptance of the leadership role is expected to limit the uncertainty that has gripped the nation since February.  Democratic Party deputy leader (PD), Enrico Letta, becomes prime minister at the head of a "grand coalition" including Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party (PDL).The swearing-in signals the end of two months of political deadlock. Italy has been hampered by political uncertainty since February, when elections left none of the candidates with enough support to form a government.Letta, a center-left politician, was sworn in on Sunday, along with the 21 new government ministers stepped forward one by one to receive the oath of office from President Giorgio Napolitano. The newly appointed Italian PM said last week that the most important priority is tackling the country’s 11.6% unemployment rate, which has pushed many young Italians to leave the country. The second most pressing issue facing Italy is the need for political reform, he said.Constitutional changes are needed to reduce the number of members of parliament and fix an electoral system that has kept the country locked in a political stalemate it can’t afford, he said.He also said the European Union’s policy of austerity needs to change. The third strongest force to emerge from the Italian election, the Five Star Movement led by former comedian, Beppe Grillo, has refused to take part in a coalition with the two main parties.BBC, CNN
