Number of Georgian Facebook users hits new high

The number of Facebook users in Georgia reached a new high in 2011, according to figures published by local media.

The Financial, an English business weekly, said there were 757,460 Facebook users and 1.4 million Internet users in Georgia, which has a population of 4.46 million.

Socialbakers, a digital analytic company, published breakdowns of Facebook users, showing 62 percent were aged between 18 and 34, and 17 percent were teenagers.

Georgia ranks first in Internet connectivity among the South Caucasus countries, which has contributed to its high number of Facebook users, according to figures from the Net Index by Ookla, a U.S. broadband testing company.

Ookla has surveyed 166 countries around the world about their facilities for download, upload, networking quality, value and connectivity promise.

On the Household Download Index, Georgia also ranks first among the South Caucasus countries, with a speed of 7.03 Mbps, whereas Azerbaijan and Armenia have speeds of 2.89 Mbps and 1.86 Mbps, respectively.

On the Household Upload Index, Georgia comes first again with a speed of 2.55 Mbps, followed by Azerbaijan on 1.03 Mbps and Armenia on 0.66 Mbps.

Georgia ranks 30th overall in the world, followed by Azerbaijan on 78th and Armenia 108th.
