More than 2.46 million eligible Singaporean voters are heading to the polls for the country’s 12th General Election on September 11.
Over 4,800 overseas Singapore citizens can also vote at 10 designated overseas polling stations, including Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, Tokyo, New York, Washington, San Francisco, Canberra and Dubai, where a significant number of Singaporeans are present.
Results of initial opinion gatherings showed that the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) gained the upper hand and is expected to retain a clear majority.
The preliminary results of the polls are scheduled to be announced at 10pm, two hours after all electoral divisions closed.
Singapore's last election in September 2011 saw the ruling PAP returned with just 60% of the vote, its worst ever electoral performance.
