A 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred offshore Japan’s northeastern prefecture of Iwate early June 23 (Vietnamese time), said the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The epicentre was monitored at 39.9 degrees north latitude and 142.6 degrees east longitude with a depth of 20 km on Pacific Ocean, said the centre.
A tsunami warning was issued for the Pacific coast of Iwate prefecture but it was then withdrawn.
According to Japan broadcasting corporation NHK, the Iwate authorities asked for an evacuation of some 8,000 households to safe areas, adding that no casualties and property losses caused by the earthquake have been reported to date.
Earthquakes measuring 4 and 5 on the Richter scale were recorded in many other localities, including Aomori, Miyagi and Akita prefectures and Morioka city./.
