As many as 10 countries agreed to assist Indonesia in tackling issues related to Rohingya immigrants with different support forms, according to the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
The countries include Qatar, Gambia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, the US, the Philippines, Cambodia and Australia, said the ministry.
In a press conference in Jakarta on June 4, Ministry Spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir said Qatar pledged 50 million USD in aid and Gambia expressed its willingness to accept immigrants to help alleviate the burden.
In an earlier press conference held in Bangkok on May 29, several countries including Australia, the US, the Philippines and Cambodia also stated their intention to give financial support to Indonesia.
According to Andy Rachmianto, Director of Indonesia’s International Security and Disarmament, the immigrants, mainly the Rohingya group from Myanmar, will be temporary housed in three accommodations in the East and North Aceh province.
The number of immigrants may reach 12,000 as thousands of others are facing miserable conditions on their sea voyage, he added.
