Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak continued to secure business and economic deals in the Republic of Korea (RoK), garnering attention for the Kingdom’s electric train projects.

On the third day of his mission to the RoK on March 23, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak met with leading electronics company Samsung to increase the company’s investments in Thailand.

Samsung recently moved its television production out of Thailand after selecting the country to serve as its base for household appliance production.

The deputy premier told the company Thailand is fully ready to support its plans and invited it to choose the Kingdom for investment in high-technology products.

The deputy premier also met with Daewoo, a leader in infrastructure projects, speaking with the company about the nation’s deep sea ports, electric trains and canal systems.

The business has already shown interest in taking part in the Pink and Yellow train line projects and is looking into the high speed train connection between Mukdaharn and Mae Sod of Tak province.

Meeting with Hana Financial, which exited Thailand during the 1997 financial crisis, Somkid suggested the institution take over smaller banks in Thailand to set up a base of offices to handle RoK businesses shifting operations to the Kingdom.

On Lotte Co. Ltd’s aims to set up duty free shopping centers at major Thai airports, the deputy prime minister said he has forwarded the matter to the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Transport while recommending that the company instead look to provincial airports.

Federation of Thai Industries President Suphan Mongkolsuthee, who is travelling with the deputy prime minister, spent the day studying the set up of a small and medium enterprise support centre to enhance Thailand’s assistance for small businesses.
