Thai PM urges calm over new migrant labour regulation

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has asked the society not to overreact to the government’s new Royal Decree on Migrant Worker Management as its harsher punishments have been delayed from effect by six months.

However, he affirmed that the regulation is needed and employers and employees must comply with its rules.

The PM has urged foreign labourers and employers to use the grace period afforded to them by the government to take necessary legal steps to satisfy the regulations of the Royal Decree on Migrant Worker Management.

He said there should be no cause for concern as the regulation does not bar foreign labourers, it merely requires them to be legally registered.

On punitive fines the private sector has called excessive, the PM said the Ministry of Labour has been asked to study the issue further.

The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) has stepped up its work to create understanding towards the intentions of the decree, underlining that it mandates proper treatment of migrant workers and adherence to labour laws.
