Thailand, India strengthen bilateral relations

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and visiting Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh have explored new areas of cooperation where both countries have mutual interests during their talks in Bangkok.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in Bangkok on May 30 for a two-day official visit with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation in all areas, especially in trade, investment and tourism.

The two PMs agreed to enhance the connectivity between the two countries and between Southeast Asia and South Asia after reviewing the development of their existing cooperation.

They witnessed the signing of several documents that will help strengthen bilateral ties in various fields, including an extradition treaty, and memorandums of understanding on cooperation in space, education and financial control.

The visit reaffirmed Thailand as a gateway to forge the links between India and Southeast Asia . Thailand and India announced to elevate their relations to a strategic partnership and this visit reflected both sides' desires to promote sustainable growth and development.

This is the first official visit to Thailand by Prime Minister Singh, who visited Thailand twice before, to attend the 1st BIMSTEC Summit in 2004 and the 15th ASEAN Summit in 2011.

The visit features the closer relations between the two nations as well as the "Look West" policy of Thailand and "Look East" Policy of India.
