Typhoon Bopha weakens into tropical depression

Typhoon Bopha or tropical storm No. 9 as it is termed in Vietnam this morning was downgraded to a tropical low pressure area, according to the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center.

 

The path of Typhoon Bopha as of 1pm on December 9.

At 1pm Dec. 9, the depression’s center was located on the island of Luzon in the southwestern part of the Philippines with sustained winds under 39 kph.

 It is forecast in the next 24 hours that the depression will move east southeast at 5 to 10 kph and will continue to be downgraded.

 As of December 8, the powerful typhoon changed direction towards north-northeast in the East Sea, according to the national weather watcher said.

 As 7 pm of December 7, the typhoon’s eye was located 15.4 degrees North latitude and 116 degrees East longitude, 440 km east-southeast of Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, packing winds of 134-166 kph.

Nearly 200,000 people were homeless and more than 500 confirmed dead after Typhoon Bopha hit the Philippines on Tuesday.
