UN anti-poverty summit closes

The United Nations Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has wrapped up with the adoption of an outcome document, touching on virtually every aspect of global issues beyond the headings of the eight MDGs.

The outcome document, entitled "Keeping the promise: united to achieve the Millennium Development Goals," focused particularly on actions, policies and strategies to support those developing countries that are lagging most behind and those goals that are most off track, thus improving the lives of the poorest people.

It expressed deep concern that progress has fallen far short of what is needed, but voiced confidence that with renewed global commitment the targets to slash hunger, poverty, disease and a host of other social ills can still be achieved by 2015.

Addressing the closing session on September 22, UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon said this summit has laid a solid foundation for quest to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by the internationally agreed deadline of 2015.

He unveiled a commitment worth 40 billion USD to implement initiatives on improving health of women and children from government, charitable organisations and private groups.

Heads of state and government to the summit reaffirmed their resolve to work together for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all people.

The MDGs include slashing poverty, combating disease, fighting hunger, protecting the environment and boosting education./.
