UN chief vows to offer support to rebuild Libya

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited Libya's capital of Tripoli and held talks with the head of the ruling National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdel Jalil here on Wednesday, vowing to offer help for Libya's reconstruction.

 

All Libyan people want to build "a democratic Libya, grounded in respect for human rights and dignity of every woman, man and child," Ban said.

He expressed condolence to the families of those who died in the unrest.

 

"The United Nations stands ready to support the Libyan people in all the areas," Ban said, citing the elections, new constitution, human rights, public security and control of weapons.

 

Meanwhile, Ban urged an immediate end to the Syrian authorities ' crackdown on protests erupted since mid-March.

 

It is Ban's first visit to the country since the uprising erupted in February which toppled Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
