United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe in western Myanmar due to recent violent conflicts in Rakhine state that forced 18,500 to evacuate to Bangladesh and left more than 100 dead.

On September 1, a UN spokesperson said the Secretary General urged parties concerned to exercise restraint.
Earlier on August 30, the UN Security Council convened a closed-door meeting to discuss violence in Rakhine state, but there is not any formal statement on the crisis.
British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft, who requested the meeting, said there are calls from council members for de-escalation.
The wave of violence erupted on August 25 when Rohingya Muslim insurgents attacked 24 security outposts and broke into a military base in Rakhine.
