Upcoming ASEAN Summit focuses on community building progress

The 25th ASEAN Summit and related meetings which will be convened in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar on November 12 and 13, will focus on the work done so far towards the ASEAN Community establishment and preparations for the bloc’s post-2015 development vision.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will lead the Vietnamese delegation to the event, with the aim of making positive contributions to ASEAN’s solidarity and unity, accelerating the process of establishing an ASEAN Community at the end of 2015 and working out the direction for the bloc’s development beyond 2015.

ASEAN reports said the bloc has completed more than 80 percent of the workload set in the ASEAN Community roadmap. More specifically, the completion rate for the Socio-Cultural Pillar was 97 percent, 85 percent for the Political-Security Pillar and 81 percent for the Economic Pillar.

The summit is expected to examine the proposal on the major factors orienting ASEAN’s development after 2015 to be submitted by the working group on ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision.

The summit and related meetings will also review the cooperation between the bloc and partners in the frameworks of ASEAN Plus One (China, Japan, India, the US and the UN), ASEAN Plus Three (China, Japan and the Republic of Korea) and the East Asia Summit (EAS) as well as draft measures to further enhance the ties.

On the occasion, the Mekong-Japan Summit will discuss the pace of their 2013-2015 cooperation plan and orientation for the partnership in future.

At the same time, the ASEAN Summit this time will consider recommendations from the High Level Task Force (HLTF) on how to enhance the capacity of the ASEAN Secretariat and the efficiency of ASEAN agencies.

Maintaining aviation and maritime security, safety and freedom will continue to be in the spotlight.
