Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong is attending the first ministerial meeting on food security of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) that opened in Niigata prefecture, Japan , on Oct. 16.
The Japan-initiated meeting is aimed at building and strengthening cooperative ties on food and agricultural policies.
During the two-day meeting, the 21 APEC member economies are expected to produce a ministerial declaration and an action plan aimed at preventing food shortages, according to Kyodo News.
Key items on the agenda of the meeting are sustainable development of the agricultural sector and the facilitation of investment, trade and markets.
Participants will also discuss how to cope with climate change and natural disasters, Kyodo added.
APEC accounts for over 40 percent of the world’s population and contributes about half of the world's GDP./.
