An Binh of Phu Giao District: a place of settlement for ethnic community

There resides 219 households of ethnic community of 921 people in An Binh Commune of Phu Giao District. They are from different origins and are now familiar with stationed crop growing. School students of Khmer community are returning home after class Realizing that the organization of crop habit is one of the major task, local authority has proposed land allocation plan for each person in the ethnic households in An Binh Commune. Such proposal was made to Department of Migration and Stationed Cultivation which has launched by 2004 with the first allocation in 2006. The delay of 2 years was due to challenging tasks of encouraging the local ethnic community to follow new way of cultivation. To change habit, it takes time and efforts. “Land is available, we just do not need to cultivate on the same land which makes the land degraded, then, the plants could not grow,” said Mr. Thach Bet, 46, one of local people who refused to join the program of stationed cultivation in 2004. For a long time, the project has been delayed until household of Mrs. Kim Thi Dang accepted the offer and challenge in new cultivation model. After 3 years participating into the project, Mrs. Dang was fully supported with seedlings and techniques by which she was getting rich. “My relatives were introduced to my new way of cultivation and I showed them how to join up,” said Mrs. Kim Thi Dang After 8 years of the project, awareness of ethnic community in An Binh Commune has been changed drammatically. In the past, Thach Bet could only earn nearly VND 5 million a year due to old way of cultivation. By now, the cashew plantation could yield and he could earn over VND 50 million a year. Nine years time has shown that the project is worth investing. By the time, the project managing unit has allocated land to 111 families on an area of 116.2 hectares out of the total 200 hectares of land fund. Beside land allocation, the managing authority also offered full technical support. Reported by Dinh Thang – Translated by Vi Bao
