Bringing Tet to the poor

On the days near the 2016 Tet (Lunar New Year) festival, organizations and individuals in the province have been very busy with social charity activities for the poor, the disabled and Agent Orange victims, bringing them a happy and warm Tet.

Tet gifts for disadvantaged people

Phu My ward’s Women’s Union in TDM city is urgently preparing for the 5th “Spring of love and affection” program. Every year, the local Women’s Union mobilizes around 200 gifts from donors for needy women through the program.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Chairwoman of the ward’s Women’s Union said that the value of the gifts was not big, but recipients felt warm because of being cared. This year, the local Women’s Union is expected to mobilize around 200-250 gifts for poor women and female workers at lodging facilities.

Other significant program for disadvantaged people on Tet is the “Tet for the poor and Agent Orange victims” movement organized by provincial Red Cross Society. As planned, provincial Red Cross Society and its affiliates will mobilize more than 28,000 gifts worth VND300,000 each for 28,000 households, helping them enjoy a happy and cozy Tet.

There are many forms on support mobilization for the movement, beginning from Nov.1, 2015 to Jan.29, 2016. Provincial Red Cross Society and its affiliates can mobilize officials, members and volunteers to give rice, money, gifts, essential food, blankets… or team up with relevant agencies to provide free medical check-up and medicine for needy people. Accordingly, many Tet gifts were presented to the poor in and out of the province.

Tran Thi Muoi Bay, Vice-Chairwoman of provincial Red Cross Society said that in order to help disadvantaged people enjoy the 2016 Tet festival, the society’s “Tet for the poor and Agent Orange victims” movement was started from Nov.2015. As of now, the movement’s first gifts have been presented to needy people, contributing to bringing them a cozy Tet. With the spirit of “One piece of food while hungry equals to a big box of food when full”, “The good leaves protect the worn-out ones”…, provincial Red Cross Society and its affiliates will bring warmness and joy of Tet to disadvantages people.

Warmness of houses

Apart from gifts, on year-end days, sectors, mass organizations and authorities at all levels of the province are very busy with building “great unity”, “red cross” houses for needy people, helping them enjoy a more joyful Tet.

With the above significance, provincial-based South Korean Business Association has just donated VND80mln to Le Thi Hao, a poor resident in North Tan Uyen district’s Tan Lap commune. The money is used to build a “red cross” house for her. Association chairman Park Jin Ku said: “The annual activity aims to assist poor and near-poor households to rise up and stabilize their lives. We want that financial support for them will get more”.

In 2015, provincial Fund for the poor and its affiliates mobilized more than VND11.5bln. Provincial Fatherland Front Committees at all levels built and upgraded 489 “red cross”, “great unity”, charity and gratitude houses worth approximately VND18bln; presented 25,628 gifts to disadvantaged people on the 2015 Tet festival; maintained charity models, namely “Charity rice jar”, “Charity soup pot”…and provided free medical check-up and medicine for the poor…
