Club for banana leaf usage in replacement of nylon bag set up

Banana growers are happy

Dang Thi Minh Thu in Thanh Loc quarter, An Thanh ward, a banana grower for many years, said “banana planting will bring economic efficiency higher than other plants amid flooding and environmental pollution in the current stage”. Banana growers can take advantage leaf, flower, fruit and trunk. Especially, in hot season, Tet holiday, banana leaf has become scarce. With the profit, Thu has positively involved in the club. “With about 200-300 banana trees planted in an orchard, growers can reap about VND1mil per month whilst banana tree is very easy for growing”.

Tran Ngoc Thu in Thanh Loc quarter added that she harvests banana leaf for every 10 days, not including harvest of fruit. Efficiency of banana tree development plus assistance from the club has helped her feel secure in work.

Small traders excited

Couple Vo Phuoc Linh in Thanh Binh quarter is one of typical small traders using banana leaf in replacement of nylon bags. Linh calculated “Earlier, I use 2.5kg of nylon bags for packing goods with expense of VND70,000 per day. But now, I use banana leaf for packing goods with expense of only VND40,000 per day. Initially, my clients did not like package by banana leaf, owing to its disadvantage but after that they also accept”.

Nguyen Tu Thien, vice chairwoman of An Thanh ward Women Union, said “club for banana leaf usage in replacement of nylon bag has been set up since June, 2011 with 68 members in the initial stage. By significant deeds, the club has helped people improve their awareness on environmental protection. The club has so far lured 98 members and set up 2 teams of promulgating small traders to use banana leaf in replacement of nylon bag. Notably, there are 30 small traders using banana leaf for packing goods.

To uphold efficiency of the club, it is necessary to spur promulgation to help customers and small traders have a common awareness on environmental protection.
