Early August 24, the Congress of provincial Association of the Elderly for the 2016-2021 tenure opened with the attendance of Pham Thi Son, Vice-Chairwoman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly (VAE); Nguyen Huu Tu, Vice-Secretary of provincial Party Committee; representatives of sectors, departments together with 142 cadres and members.

In the last tenure, the association attached special importance to taking care of the elderly. The whole province now has a total of nearly 12,000 elderly people aged 80 and above, 4,510 elderly people enjoying monthly allowances under the Government’s Decree No.136/CP and granted health insurance cards. There were 102 needy elderly people supported more than 3.5billion for housing construction through many different sources. Since 2013, the association and its branches have mobilized nearly VND4.7billion from organizations and individuals. The fund was used to provide free eye check-ups and surgeries for more than 8,000 elderly people; present eyeglasses to 149 elderly people…The association has also maintained and developed 490 clubs for the elderly.
Speaking at the conference, Mr.Tu emphasized that taking care of the elderly, helping them live healthily, happily and uphold their life experience in family and society is a practical deed. Hence, sectors, authorities at all levels and mass organizations of the province need to further care for the elderly, creating favorable conditions for them to take part in Party and government building, patriotic emulation movements in the coming time. The association also needs to better carry out dissemination on the Party’s policies and the State’s laws among members; build up a strong organization, contributing to protecting members’ legitimate rights and interests.
The congress nominated an executive board of the association for the 2016-2021, including 13 members. Nguyen Xuan Vinh was re-elected as Chairman of the association. The congress also sorted out a 4-member delegation to attend the 5th Congress of the VAE.
