Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan on August 12 cut a ribbon for inauguration of an International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in central Binh Dinh province.

Deputy Nguyen Thien Nhan gives a speech at the inaugural ceremony for the ICISE.The event’s attendees included nearly 500 leading international scientists including five Nobel laureates and Fields medalist professor Ngo Bao Chau.In his address, Deputy PM Nhan affirmed that developing science, technology along with education and training is the top national policy in the strategy for science and technology development through 2020 and a key factor behind the country’s rapid and sustainable development.Science and technology plays a crucial role in boosting production, renewing growth model, improving competitive capacity of the national economy and pushing up the process of national industrialization and modernization.The Vietnamese Government has adopted many programmes and targets for scientific research such as developing mathematics for the 2010-2010 period, setting up the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) headed by prof. Ngo Bao Chau and devising a strategy for the development of Vietnamese physics until 2020.The inauguration of the ICISE and international physics conference themed “Windows on the Universe” marked a significant milestone in the joint efforts of International scientists to help their young Vietnamese counterparts approach the world’s advanced science.Binh Dinh provincial People’s Committee Chairman Le Huu Loc described the ICISE as a bridge connecting young Asian scientists to global scientific research centres.The latest scientific discoveries will be announced regularly at the centre, Loc added.The ICISE is a French style architectural complex at a total cost of US$2 million which consists of a three-storey international convention centre covering a total area of 200,000 m2 and other seminar and function rooms.VOV
