Dien Bien Phu Victory – historic issues

On May 6, the national seminar on “Dien Bien Phu Victory - historic issues” was co-held by HCM University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Thu Dau Mot University, the Southern Institute of Social Sciences and the HCMC War Remnants Museum at Thu Dau Mot University. At the event, nearly 200 scientists gathered to make clear historic issues of Dien Bien Phu campaign after 60 years of Dien Bien Phu Victory.

 From Dien Bien Phu campaign to Geneva Conference

 

Ph.D Le Huu Phuoc, deputy rector of HCM University of Social Sciences and Humanities cum head of the seminar’s content commission said that the event focused on 4 main topics such as from Dien Bien Phu campaign to Geneva Conference; Dien Bien Phu campaign to Geneva Conference – international angles; battlefield and Dien Bien Phu campaign; Dien Bien Phu campaign and Geneva Accords – value and experimental lessons.

 

With the topic of from Dien Bien Phu campaign to Geneva Conference, some familiar issues were explained by scientists and made clear by new databases and arguments such as Ho Chi Minh’s vision on the Winter-Spring Strategic Offensive of

1953-1954; military art and creation of the Party and General Vo Nguyen Giap in this campaign and so on.

 

In addition, there were contents under new and unique approach ways such as military geology factor of Dien Bien Phu victory; silent soldiers in Dien Bien Phu campaign; Vietnamese people’s humanity through view of French prisoners of war in Dien Bien Phu battlefield and among others.

 

Aside from referring to key contents such as Dien Bien Phu was looked from cold war; Dien Bien Phu and Geneva Conference with the national liberation movement and so on, scientists highlighted international friends’ help in the final period of the anti-French resistant war and etc.

 

Value and experimental lessons

 

After 56 days and nights, Vietnamese troops smashed the Dien Bien Phu stronghold, killed or captured 16,200 French soldiers, shot down 62 aircraft, and seized all enemy weapons and military equipment. At 17:30 on May 7, 1954, Vietnamese forces took control of the enemy command center. General Christian de Castries, the members of his staff, and all the French soldiers at Dien Bien Phu stronghold surrendered. The flag of the Vietnam People’s Army was raised on the bunker of the French command center.

 

From this victory, scientists sparkled values and experimental lessons of Dien Bien Phu victory through arguments such as Dien Bien Phu victory – position and obsession; legendary stories about a legendary general; Dien Bien Phu victory – overview from cultural section and so on.

 

Particularly, at the seminar scientists stated that it was necessary to preserve and promote relic values of Dien Bien Phu battlefield timely and scientifically.
