Easing flood-hit victims’ pain

Overcoming over 1,200 km, the provincial Rescue delegation came to flood victims in the Central region. Despite remoteness and tiresomeness, the delegation members were eager to hand small gifts over the victims.

Van Kieu ethnic group is living along to Dakrong River and Truong Son Mount. Chain. In the resistance war, the group was loyal to the Party and followed late President Ho Chi Minh’s teachings and thenceforth all of the group members have had Uncle Ho’s last name. The flashflood in 2009 took away their assets and in the last flooding from Sept. 29 till Oct. 5, 2010 the group suffered a heavy damage again.

Ho Van Lam, 68, in Ta Long commune, Dakrong district, moaned “I’ve lived here for a long time. My children have their families and I and my wife have lived together alone. The last flooding took away our food. We don’t have anything to eat”.

Meanwhile, residents of Huc Nghi commune, nearly 10km from the Ta Long commune, also suffered similar damages. Ho Van Bang has 5 children, of whom the oldest child is now 7 years old. His family must eat manioc during the last flooding. Thanh Le Trade, Import-Export Ltd granted 500 gift packages, each worth VND400,000, to residents in the above communes whilst Becamex IDC offered medicines worth VND75mil for the localities.

Forgetting lunch, the delegation continued its itinerary to Lao Bao border gate under Quang Tri province’s Huong Hoa district to grant gift to local residents. Huong Hoa district’s Tan Long commune has over 887 households, mainly Van Kieu ethnic group. In the past flooding, more than 425 households suffered heavy damage. Many children’s face looked gaunt, showing struggles with ravenousness and chill.

The provincial rescue delegation timely granted essential gift packages of mosquito-net, blanket, sweater to flood victims. Holding a new mosquito-net, Ho Khan said “Mosquitoes here are very big, so I will give this mosquito-net for my children”.
