East Sea marine security needs to be respected

Assuring security for key navigation routes through the East Sea is a significant matter for both regional countries and other international nations, Dr. Takashi Hosoda from Charles University in the Czech Republic told Vietnam News Agency correspondents on January 21.

Stable shipping lanes are an important infrastructure facility that enhances economic growth, he said, underscoring that regional stability has a major influence on safe fishing activities.

Regarding China’s territorial claim in the East Sea, Takashi Hosoda was of the opinion that Beijing uses outdated documents without legal value and relying on literary works to declare its sovereignty. He said that the claim is irrational and threatens modern international laws and norms on territorial proclamation.

He stated that China’s building of artificial islands and military base in the East Sea, as well as pilot flights to its illegally-built airport have escalated tensions in the region. He suggested strong nations such as the US, Australia and India should enhance naval cooperation with limited-capacity countries in the region, to ensure security in the East Sea.

He also recommended Japan help regional nations increase capacity for law enforcement at sea by providing patrol ships or human resource training.

Relevant sides should address East Sea disputes via peaceful means, not only through a bilateral mechanism, but also multilateral mechanisms like ASEAN and the United Nations.
