Ensuring supply of oxygen for treatment of Covid-19 patients

Early July 19, Nguyen Van Loi, member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of provincial Party Committee and leaders of departments, agencies and sectors in the province carried out an inspection tour on Covid-19 prevention and control at Messer Vietnam Industrial Gas Co. Ltd. in the VSIP I in Thuan An city’s Binh Hoa ward.

During the working visit with Messer Vietnam Industrial Gas Co., Ltd., Mr. Loi encouraged leaders, officers and employees working at the company. He proposed the company’s directorate to maintain production of compressed gas, especially oxygen to ensure the supply of oxygen to the province and neighboring localities in case of necessity to use it for treating and curing Covid-19 patients. According to him, along with maintaining production activities, the company's directorate should pay attention to taking care of officials and workers ‘health; try to maintain "three on-site" production activities to create a "three-protection wall” (protection of production, workers and factory).

Receiving the delegation in the premise of factory, Nguyen Van Phuong, Production Manager of Messer Vietnam Industrial Gas Co., Ltd. thanked the delegation’s attention and encouragement to the company. Mr. Phuong said that the company now has a total of 65 employees who are working under the "3 on-site" rule to maintain production of compressed gas, especially oxygen to support the local health sector in treating Covid-19 patients.

Mr. Phuong added that Messer Vietnam Industrial Gas Co. Ltd. was established and put into operation in 1999 with a modern production line worth US$ 6 million. Currently, the company can supply about 1,600 cubic meters of oxygen to the market every day. In case of need, the company can improve its production and supply capacity to about 2,500 - 3,000 cubic meters of oxygen gas per day at the local demand for treating Covid-19 patients. According to him, if using a ventilator, each patient will use up about 1kg of compressed oxygen after 3 days. Therefore, provincial leaders may be assured of the oxygen source for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Chuong, Director of provincial Department of Health said that the local health sector is currently trying to find suppliers on medical equipment for treating Covid-19 patients. The province’s facilities directly involving in the treatment of Covid-19 patients such as provincial General Hospital, Field Hospital, Medical Centers of Thuan An city, Ben Cat town, Tan Uyen town, Bau Bang district... are in need of oxygen, modern medical equipment and supplies. Oxygen is an extremely important component in the treatment of Covid-19 patients because patients with signs of illness often experience chest tightness, shortness of breath, lack of oxygen, etc. Hence, opportunely giving patients ventilators in combination with medical measures will help them recover quickly.

After discussing the company’s directorate, Mr. Loi proposed provincial Department of Health to coordinate with provincial Department of Industry and Trade to directly exchange with the company about a plan on supply of oxygen for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. The number of Covid-19 patients at provincial General Hospital, Field Hospital and medical centers of the above localities is increasing day by day. Ensuring the supply of oxygen to support treatment for Covid-19 patients is now an urgent task of the province.
