At present, urbanization has taken place everywhere, more than half of the world's population has lived in urban areas.

In Vietnam alone, in the recent 2 decades, along with the process of industrialization and modernization, urbanization has also taken place rapidly, forming up huge urban areas, of which Southeastern region in general and Binh Duong in particular are a typical example.
At the scientific seminar named “20 years of Southern urbanization, argument and practice” co-held by Thu Dau Mot University, Center for Urban Research and Development, the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Center for Urban Research and Forecast, Nguyen Minh Giao, head of the provincial Committee for Education and Propaganda assessed that over the past years, Binh Duong has become famous with its achievement of renewal cause. From a poor land with poor quality infrastructure facilities, Binh Duong has thus far become an industrial province in the Southern key economic zone and integrated gradually into the international economy. This is a huge achievement and pride of local people and authority.
Looking back the time of re-establishment of Binh Duong province in 1997, local change makes many people surprised. As of August, 2014, rate of urbanization reached 81.86%. By the end of 2014, Binh Duong won a 60.8% growth in industry, 36.2% in service, 3% in agriculture compared with 1997 with 50.4% in industry, 26.8% in service, 22.8% in agriculture.
Binh Duong is home to 29 industrial parks and 8 industrial compounds with the area of about 10,000ha. Especially, Binh Duong has one industrial, service and urban complex occupying on an area of nearly 4,200ha, contributing to attract investment projects and spurring process of industrialization and modernization. More importantly, Binh Duong builds and develops Binh Duong New City and inaugurates the provincial administration center. This will be headquarters of central run Binh Duong city prior to 2020.
In order to deserve this position, Binh Duong has built many breakthrough programs including Binh Duong urban development program for the period of 2011-2015, vision till 2020; strived to become the first class urban area by 2015 and a central run city before 2020.
Bounding for sustainable urban development, the seminar’s organizing board received 48 writings from scientists, referring to urbanization of the Southeastern region, including Binh Duong.
Hong Trong Quyen, deputy headmaster of Thu Dau Mot University said that aside from urban development, the Southern urbanization has appeared problems of increase in population, rapid development of industry, residential allocation in production areas, space narrowing and more.
