FAO pledges continued support for Vietnam

FAO representative Ken Shimizu made the commitment at a seminar held in Hanoi on January 15 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Addressing the seminar, Mr Shimizu said the FAO has begun implementing the cooperative framework designed between Vietnam and FAO for the 2012–2016 period, prioritising the development of Vietnam’s agro-forestry and fisheries sector.

Other key areas of focus include food security and safety, hygiene and nutrition, the agricultural sector’s sustainable development, bettering the lives of rural area residents, and adapting to the repercussions of climate change.

MARD Deputy Minister Bui Ba Bong noted the agricultural sector’s Doi Moi (Renewal) achievements and its important contributions to Vietnam’s transformation into a middle-income country. But the country is still grappling with the challenges of inflation, trade deficits, and weakness in the banking and business sectors.

The agricultural sector should adopt a detailed production development model capable of delivering quality, efficiency, and sustainable added value.
